Taiwan experienced a significant expansion in its trade surplus, reaching an unprecedented USD 16.83 billion in August. This figure marks a substantial rise from the USD 11.50 billion recorded in the same month the previous year and surpasses market predictions of a USD 12.80 billion surplus. Exports surged by 34.1% year-over-year, amounting to USD 58.49 billion, largely fueled by notable advancements in the sectors of information, communication, and audio-video products, which soared by 79.9%, alongside electronic components, which rose by 34.6%. Export growth was notably strong to regions such as ASEAN (+46.7%), the United States (+65.2%), and China & Hong Kong (+15.9%), while exports to Europe witnessed a decline of 10.5%. On the import side, a 29.7% increase led to a total of USD 41.66 billion, driven by heightened purchases of electronic components (+54.5%), information and audio-video products (+118.5%), and machinery (+47.1%), despite a downturn in mineral products by 8.1%. The growth in imports was primarily sourced from Korea (+64.9%), ASEAN (+48.8%), China & Hong Kong (+23.1%), Japan (+24.7%), the United States (+21.3%), and Europe (+9.8%). For the January to August period, Taiwan's overall trade surplus reached USD 86.89 billion, with a significant portion, USD 85.36 billion, attributed to its trade with the United States.
