The University of Michigan's consumer sentiment index for the United States was adjusted downward to 53.6 in October 2025, compared to an initial reading of 55 and a previous 55.1 in September. This marks the lowest level in five months, with declines observed in both the current conditions index (revised to 58.6 from 61) and the expectations index (revised to 50.3 from 51.2). Inflation expectations for the upcoming year decreased slightly to 4.6% from 4.7%, maintaining consistency with the preliminary estimate. In contrast, the 5-year inflation outlook was revised upward to 3.9% from both the initial estimate of 3.7% and the same figure from the prior month. According to Joanne Hsu, Director of Surveys of Consumers, "Current personal financial conditions showed a slight improvement, while anticipated personal finances saw a decline. Overall, consumers perceive minimal significant changes in economic circumstances since last month, with inflation and high prices remaining central concerns. This month, there was limited evidence suggesting consumers are linking the federal government shutdown with economic impacts."
